How BIA technology works?

Electrical Current

A small, harmless electrical current is transmitted through the body via electrodes typically placed on the hands, feet, or both.

Tissue Resistance

Different types of body tissues—muscle, fat, and water—conduct electricity at different rates. Muscle tissue, which contains a high percentage of water, conducts electricity well, while fat tissue, which contains less water, offers more resistance.

Impedance Measurement

It measures the resistance to the electrical current and calculates the impedance. This data is used to estimate the relative amounts of body fat and lean body mass.

Maximizing Data Accuracy

The 4C method is currently the technology that can analyse body composition with the highest accuracy. However, due to the high cost of measurement, the DXA method has been adopted for basic data in many devices so far. TANITA sought more accurate basic data and acquired new data using the 4C method.


In the 4C method, in addition to the DXA method, by combining four types of analysis methods: air substitution method / underwater weight method, heavy water dilution method, and weight measurement, the body composition is divided into four components (4C): fat, protein, water, and minerals. This makes it possible to analyse body composition with accuracy beyond the DXA method and overcome errors due to physique and body shape, swelling, and late water.

Multi-Frequency Measurement

In addition to dual frequency measurement, multiple frequency measurement technology allows TANITA to use Reactance, which is the long-like information of cell membranes, for analysis. These enable precise analysis that separates intracellular fluids and extracellular fluids, and provides high accuracy compared to single-frequency devices.

Measure BIA at 3 or 6 different frequencies. The additional frequencies provide an exceptional level of accuracy compared to single and dual frequency monitors. All TANITA professional body composition analyzers are with 50kHz frequency, the most stable frequency.

The 4C technology estimates each compartment (bady fat. protein, bone and water) individually with reference to different gold standards, thus maximizing the result accuracy.


Based on your intra-cellular and extra-cellular data, TANITA body composition monitor advises your personal Muscle Quality Score (assessed in 3 categories: High, Standard and Low), informing you the condition of your muscle tissue qualitatively.


With reference to this score, users can improve the Muscle Strength by adjusting exercise pattern to reach maximum performance.
